I used 16 0.1-wavelength radials (6.67 ft long). If you're planning to mount this on the top of your van, I'd use the roof of the van as the ground plane. BTW, this antenna needs some support. the coil assembly isn't as strong as I'd like it to be, so I would support the upper section with guy lines or something. Sean,
