Welcome to the Ek’s Files!
January 23rd, 2008 by Dave
I’m Dave Ek, and this is where I write about stuff. Most of my posts are about computers or ham radio (I’m NKØE), but sometimes I also risk playing the fool by ranting about politics or society–you know, serious stuff.
Or sometimes I write just because I need the practice.
My original excuse for starting this blog was so that it could supplement my other web pages. My main web page, eksfiles.net, has mostly ham radio stuff I’ve done over the years. My digital setting circles site describes how to build digital setting circles for your astronomical telescope. It’s a pretty popular project. And my ham radio field contest logging software for the Palm is described on my GOLog site. The chances are good that you found my blog by following a link from one of those sites, but if not, go on over and check them out.Part of the fun of having a blog is dorkin’ around with the layout and features, so things may change around here at random intervals. I use WordPress, and it has a ton of features, themes, and plugins to try out. Hopefully it won’t get too ridiculous here, like those web pages written by newbies where every header flashes in red and every bitmap dances and wiggles.
Yeah, you know what I’m talkin’ about.
Have a little fun while you’re here. Vote in the survey (you can vote as many times as you want, just in case you feel really strongly about something). Leave a comment telling me how much you liked something I wrote. Or tell me how big of a dork I am. Or point me to something that’s interesting.
I write this stuff for fun. Nobody’s writing me any checks or buying any ad space. It’s a lot more fun if someone actually reads this stuff. A few people actually do read it.
And you know who you are. Thanks for stopping by.

Hi Dave.
I have built a couple of your DSC units and use them on my scopes and I got a few people at the LASS interested and they also built some. This was awhile back and I just decided to check your web site to see if there was anything new and I was surprised to find the web site changed and a BLOG. I have added it to my Google home page and will enjoy reading through it when I get a chance. Just wanted to let you know that you have made my nights at the telescope much more interesting for the past year. I did a quick scan and saw some new projects that you are working on and I will be looking into those. I would be especially interested in getting DSC working with Linux as I took the plunge awhile back and now almost exclusively Linux (Linux Mint and PClinuxOS are my two favorites) except for running programs that need windows to run so hoping for more appications for Linux. I am also a geek interested in computers, astronomy, many other science subjects and a ham radio operator (N6UME).
I just wanted to let you know that I appiciate all you have done and what you will be doing and I will start reading through your BLOG now to see what’s new. Keep up the good work

Thanks for the comments, Jerry. FWIW, I’d be really surprised if my own digital setting circles software didn’t run just fine in Linux under Wine (although I haven’t tried it yet).
